It’s week one of Strictly Come Dancing!

Just incase you hadn’t noticed, the new season of television shows are all starting to return to our televisions this month.

This week saw the start of the 12th season of Strictly Come Dancing on BBC, where the latest 15 hopefuls attempt to twirl their way to the coveted trophy with their professional dancing partners. This years start studded line up includes Gregg Wallace, Jennifer Gibney, Tim Wonnacott, Caroline Flack, Pixie Lott, Scott Mills, Steve Backshall, Jake Wood, Sunetra Sarker, Mark Wright, Simon Webbe, Thom Evans, Alison Hammond, Judy Murray and finally Frankie Bridge.

Taking over the presentation anchoring is all-female duo Tess Daley and the uniquely witty Claudia Winkleman, after long time television favourite Bruce Forsythe decided it was time to finally retire after several decades on our TV screens. He got the chance to say a short and heartfelt farewell on last weeks curtain raising show.

The real competition starts this Friday with the first of many weeks of dance routines that will be scrutinised and dissected by the judging panel of Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli, Craig Revel Horwood and Darcey Bussell. Masterchef favourite Greg Wallace could be a marked man after giving Horwood a hard time on his cookery show, so revenge may be in the air, not to mention being odds on to leave first according to the betting websites. However, on first impressions, the most awkward and stiffest dances during the group opener last week has to go to Judy Murray who may struggle to keep her place if she doesn’t loosen up.

You can catch all the twists and twirls right across the BBC over the coming months, with a Christmas special to come no doubt. It will fly by!

Who will be the next British pop superstar?

Where there’s Strictly on the BBC, you can guarantee that ITV will have their flagship reality entertainment show The X-Factor not too far behind. Already a few weeks in now, the show has a new look to the judging panel. Yes the flat topped, high trousered one is back from a few years away from Britain in the USA. Simon Cowell has made a long-awaited return to the UK version of the show. The US version was recently axed. No coincidences there of course! But with American Idol being the mainstay for many moons now, another replica on a rival network only had it’s days undoubtedly numbered. And so we have to put up with the arrogant one once again.

With Simon comes many changes as last years judging panelists Sharon Osbourne, Gary Barlow and Nicole Scherzinger all got fired! Nice work Simon. In their place steps Cheryl Fernandez-Versini (formerly Cole) and Mel B. How predictably dull. Anyhow, this stage of the season is far from boring as it’s the auditions.

There’s already been some unmissable moments whereby several delusional, tone-deaf contestants have made total fools of themselves on national telelvision, truly believing they have what it takes to be the next pop superstar. Wonders never cease! With just a few more rounds to go, the remaining audition shows are compulsory viewing so even if you’re not a fan of the high production value, stage shows; you must watch these as they provide the best car crash TV moments you could expect. X-Factor can be seen right across the ITV network all season long so don’t miss it!

Downton Abbey returns this month!

The new series of Downton Abbey starts on 21st September. Fans of the show will be rejoicing that the bold decision was taken not to axe it and continue the drama series that has captured the imaginations of audiences of all ages, all around the world. All the usual cast are back but this season includes some new and exciting additions, most notably Richard E. Grant who plays the character of Simon Bricker, and is said to be ready to ruffle a few feathers. The return of Thomas also means with it more drama and can Mr and Mrs Bates finally find happiness together? Only time will tell.
