Get ready for the World Cup 2014 in Brazil

Brazil 2014

Enjoy the best coverage on UK TV this summer!

Believe it or not but this summer’s World Cup tournament is less than a month away. The big party kicks off in Sao Paulo on Thursday, 12th June, 2014 with hosts Brazil playing Croatia.

For four weeks of glorious entertainment showcasing the beautiful game, 32 teams will test their skill and stamina against each other in a quest to lift the coveted trophy in the heat of South America. Current Champions Spain will kick off their defence of the title in the Arena Fonte Nova, Salvador against Holland on Friday, 13th June, 2014 whilst the Three Lions of England will start their tournament on Saturday, 14th June, 2014 in the Arena Amazonia, Manaus against Italy.

This year tournament has placed England in one of the toughest groups out there. Roy Hodgson’s young squad of lions will be tested fully, with matches to come against Italy, Costa Rica and Uruguay. With an in form Luis Suarez up front for Uruguay, the enigma that is Mario Balotelli leading the line for Italy and Bryan Ruiz at centre forward for Costa Rica, England know full well that their defence must be water tight to avoid an embarrassing early exit from the group stages.

England Manager Roy Hodgson recently announced his preliminary 30-man squad and there were certainly one or two surprises in their, with the boss opting for youth over experience in many parts of the field. Chelsea fans might be scratching their heads wondering why the likes of ex-captain John Terry and full back Ashley Cole won’t be going to South America, with the latter of the two recently announcing his retirement from international football after learning of his omission from the squad.

However, Frank Lampard did make the grade again although his involvement is more likely to be as a substitute rather than a starter with players such as Jack Wilshere, Ross Barkley and the highly rated Adam Lallana more likely to get the nod.

Here’s a complete list of the Roy Hodgson’s England squad. Let’s hope they put in a great performance and one that can be built on for the future:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), Fraser Forster (Celtic), Ben Foster (West Bromwich Albion)

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Phil Jagielka (England), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Luke Shaw (Southampton), Chris Smalling (Manchester United)

Midfielders: Ross Barkley (Everton), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Southampton), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Manchester City), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal)

Forwards: Rickie Lambert (Southampton), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Daniel Welbeck (Manchester United)

Where will you be watching?

As always, the BBC and ITV will share the spoils of the tournament with both channels aiming to get the best punditry teams available to offer insight, opinion and more. On the BBC, they have an impressive collection of main stays and ex-players including Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, Rio Ferdinand, ex-France and Arsenal captain Thierry Henry, Phil Neville and the soon to retire Alan Hansen; who has enjoyed over two decades working at the BBC on their flagship show Match of the Day. Strangely there is no mention of Mark Lawrenson who is rumoured to also be leaving his long-established seat at the corporation.

Over on ITV their team, based in the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro, will consist of main presenter Adrian Chiles alongside Gordon Strachan, Ian Wright, Roy Keane, Patrick Vieira, Gus Poyet and Lee Dixon. It is also rumoured that injured England winger Andros Townsend will also be joining the team to offer opinion, most likely for England’s group games and hopefully beyond.
